Observers, spectators, watching it all unfold like a movie. Watching it all unfold. The spectacle of a whale used to swimming miles a day in the sea, now twisting and flipping in the air. Landing in a concrete pool of water and excrement, while crowds clap and cheer from the stands. So quick to laugh and squeal with excitement, without a thought or question. Why are we keeping lions in cages and calling them sanctuaries? How can we put polar bears in a mid-western zoo and pretend like we're providing them with a suitable habitat? Why do we crave a closer look at the expense of their well-being? There will be no teachable moment, unless we're trying to teach that it's okay to kidnap animals from the wild, enslave them, and breed them for our own selfish reasons.

If they could bottle air and sell it to us, I think they would. I don't think they'd blink. If there was one last pool of water to drink from, you know we'd die of thirst because we couldn't afford it. If there was a plant that could cure cancer, you know it would be banned and reproduced in a lab, sold to dying people like diamonds in a plastic bottle. We are not what they care about. We'll never be what they care about, until it's time to collect from us. If there was a worldwide pandemic, they'd find a way to fly to the moon and watch us die like exploding stars from the comfort of their back porches.

Completely worthless, after a lifetime of back-breaking work. Old, weak, and spent. Too much of a liability, year after year of monotony, decades of weekends with friends and family lost. Now considered a drain on the economy. Pensions whittled away slowly. Promises broken, crumbling relationships. Work hard, but remember what we're working for. Do we need to stretch ourselves so thin for something we don't enjoy? Can we be happy with less? Can we make do with what we have? Can we trade a few comforts for the things that matter more? Or are we bound to be stuck in this cycle of debt payments, forgotten objects, forgotten dreams, a loss of wonder, and continuous apathy?

Increased occupancy leads to increased revenue. Poverty and lack of opportunity is met with concrete walls when social systems and educational systems fail to address the underlying issues. We patch up the problems with harder tests and more demands, while guidance counselors and social workers take pay cuts and lose their jobs. People buy stock in private prison corporations, where more beds, filled beds, equal success. Success is measured by how many prison beds are filled, not by keeping people out of prison in the first place, or by the opportunities they are given when released. Corporations profit from every phone call home, every bar of soap, every hour worked. Every hour, they make pennies for themselves while the rest is divvied out. Contracts are developed, guarantees are made, quotas must be met. People are being exploited while stockholders dine on fine foods and make excuses for themselves.
